Credit for Contributions to Qualifying Charitable Organizations
This individual income tax credit is available for contributions to Qualifying Charitable Organizations that provide immediate basic needs to residents of Arizona who receive temporary assistance for needy families (TANF) benefits, are low income residents of Arizona, or are individuals who have a chronic illness or physical disability. The tax credit is claimed on Form 321. The maximum credit allowed is $800 for married filing joint filers and $400 for single, heads of household, and married filing separate filers.*
The preceding paragraph was copied from the Arizona Department of Revenue’s web page. Why is this information provided to you?
August 6, 2020, Tremble Clefs Arizona received a letter from the State of Arizona Department of Revenue stating that we have met all the criteria to be considered a Qualifying Charitable Organization. We are now eligible to be part of what is commonly referred to as the Arizona Tax Credit Program. This means that Arizona residents can use donations to TC AZ for tax credit when taxes are owed to the State of Arizona. The 2020 maximum credit for an individual against Arizona taxes is $400; for a married couple filing jointly it is $800.
I’m not going to offer you tax advice, however I would like to tell you how this affects the Arizona income tax that I pay. My income, while modest, is large enough that the State of Arizona requires me to pay an income tax. This income tax is my Arizona tax liability. A number of years ago, my tax preparer told me that if I donated within limits, to qualified charities and schools, I could claim a tax credit for the amount of the donation. This credit would dollar for dollar, reduce my tax bill. In other words, either pay the state or donate to a school program or qualified charity.
How does that affect Tremble Clefs Arizona? My wife and I file our taxes jointly and for 2020 can donate any amount up to $800 to Tremble Clefs Arizona and my tax bill is reduced by that donation amount. If I were single, or filing taxes separately, I could donate up to $400.
I have converted most of my Arizona tax liability to donations for schools and charities for over 10 years. The way I see it, this allows me to decide how my tax dollars are spent - directly to the state to decide or use some of it for a worthy charity or school.
You may qualify to take advantage of this program, and may decide to convert part of your Arizona state tax obligation to a donation to Tremble Clefs Arizona. If you have made a donation to Tremble Clefs Arizona since January 1, 2020, that donation may qualify. You need to keep your receipts for the donations.
If you are interested, I would suggest that you speak to your tax consultant. Tremble Clefs Arizona has been issued QCO CODE 22218. This code is also listed on the Arizona Department of Revenue website.
Please consider the personal relationship you have with Tremble Clefs Arizona, your own Arizona tax situation, and the financial challenges of Tremble Clefs Arizona.
